Ancient History of Korean Martial Arts

The roots of Korean martial arts stretch back to prehistoric times, when early Koreans used wooden and stone weapons for hunting and combat. As people migrated to the Korean Peninsula, they faced frequent invasions, prompting the evolution of sophisticated military tactics and self-defense systems. Over the centuries, these techniques gave rise to a rich martial heritage that continues to influence training today.

The traditional martial arts of Korea are often classified into three major historical branches: Tribal Martial Arts, Buddhist Martial Arts, and Royal Court Martial Arts. These systems form the historical foundation of what we now practice at Dragon Mu Sool.

Tribal Martial Arts (SahDoh MuSool)

Tribal martial arts were developed and passed down within clans, tribes, and early Korean city-states. Known as SahDoh MuSool, these techniques emphasized raw strength, wrestling, and practical hand-to-hand combat. They were used by militias and in traditional sports like Taekkyon and Ssireum, which continue to influence modern martial arts such as TaeKwonDo.

Buddhist Martial Arts (BoolKyo MuSool)

When Buddhism entered Korea in the 4th century, it brought with it a meditative and internal approach to martial practice. BoolKyo MuSool was developed by monks as both a method of self-defense and a path to physical and spiritual wellness. It combines breathing techniques, meditation, and powerful yet controlled self-defense movements. These monk-warriors occasionally formed elite groups to protect sacred temples and aid during national crises.

Royal Court Martial Arts (KoongJoong MuSool)

The royal courts of Korea maintained their own elite martial systems, known as KoongJoong MuSool, used by palace guards, bodyguards, and military officers. These martial arts included techniques for joint manipulation, pressure points, and the use of compact or concealable weapons such as fans and short swords. These methods were refined for close-quarters defense and high-level protection, often influencing martial developments in neighboring countries.

Despite periods of suppression during the later dynasties, where martial practice was discouraged by ruling elites, many of these techniques were preserved and passed down by dedicated practitioners.

The Legacy Continues

At Dragon Mu Sool, we honor this deep and diverse martial heritage by integrating elements from all three branches into a modern, structured system. Our training connects students to centuries of Korean tradition while helping them grow in strength, discipline, and self-awareness.

Modern History of Korean Martial Arts

The modern era of traditional Korean martial arts was shaped by a period of tremendous adversity. In 1910, with the dissolution of the Korean Royal Court under Japanese occupation, much of Korea’s cultural identity, including its martial arts, was actively suppressed. Practicing or teaching native martial systems became illegal, forcing many skilled martial artists into secrecy.

Among these dedicated practitioners was a respected martial arts master who had trained in three distinct systems:

  • Kwun Sool, a striking style focused on powerful kicks and punches

  • Yoo Sool, a soft style emphasizing joint locks and throws

  • Yoo-Kwun Sool, a hybrid of both hard and soft techniques

These teachings were passed down quietly within families, safeguarded from outside interference. Practitioners risked harsh punishment to preserve their knowledge and traditions, relying on private instruction and oral transmission to continue their legacy.

One lineage in particular maintained these teachings across 16 generations, adapting in secret while preparing for a time when these arts could reemerge. Even during times of war and national crisis, the tradition was protected through family arrangements, underground networks, and introductions to elusive masters throughout the Korean countryside.

In the years following Korea’s liberation, martial artists once again sought out ancient knowledge, often hidden in remote Buddhist temples and private collections. These temples, while not always training grounds, housed sacred texts and forgotten techniques that had survived the occupation. The rediscovery and reintegration of these elements played a critical role in rebuilding the martial arts of Korea for the modern world.

At Dragon Mu Sool, we continue this legacy of preservation, discipline, and respect for history. Our curriculum reflects a blend of time-honored martial techniques and a deep commitment to personal development, carrying forward the strength and wisdom of those who kept these arts alive through generations of change.
